Up! Up and Away!

“Oh, grey hill,
Where the grazing herd
Licks the purple blossom,
Crops the spiky weed!
Oh, stony pasture,
Where the tall mullein
Stands up so sturdy
On its little seed!”
– Edna St. Vincent Millay

I have written about the Mullein growing nearby previously, but still am preoccupied with its growth! So much so that I even had a neighbor take a picture of it with her smart phone for me. I haven't been able to take my buggy ride past for over 3 weeks! Yesterday I bit the bullet and did and am still waiting for it to come to full bloom! I don't know why his plant fascinates me so much! I do know that my love for it started in June 2014 in the SC campground when I saw one growing at the edge of the road right in front of the laundromat. I was probably the only one who even noticed this strange weed there and didn't know a thing about it until I did some research.

As the buds open I plan to follow their growth! From the internet I learned that the flower is used to make medicine. It is used for cough, whooping cough, tuberculosis, bronchitis, hoarseness, pneumonia, earaches, colds, chills, swine flu, fever, allergies, tonsillitis and sore throat. It is traditionally used for its ability to promote the discharge of mucus and to soothe mucus membranes

  2. I read that it was good for aches and pains! So I made tea and Dick drank it for a few days until the plant got past its prime and got holes in the leaves. I only have one plant and they say that it only blossoms every other year so the experiment is on hold.

  3. Well, I must admit, I haven't heard of this before blogging. Another blogger had a couple of posts about it
    ...now you!!

  4. I am obsessed with wooly mullein too, and am careful not to mow over them where they grow along the lane. I love your pictures.
