Good Memories

Last night I watched TV and was blown away with a show special.
“One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga” It was produced a while back but I missed it. (I have been following Lady Gaga for some time now.) The original is on YouTube. Here is a link so you can read the professional review. Just click on it. Go there and come back for more from me.

Lady Gaga has intrigued me since I first came across her acting and singing. She has that "something!" Now to go back many years I must tell you that I have discovered stars before they were stars!

The first was Hank Williams. In 1947 at age 11, our next door neighbor played cowboy music and I used to go to the window at the end of our upstairs hallway and listen to Hank wailing away from the neighbor's bedroom that faced our house. From then on I was hooked. I guess Hank was already becoming a popular star but I didn't know that and thought I discovered him!

Silly child.

Then next was Patsy Cline. The year was 1950. My boyfriend and I travelled with friends to a little hilltop bar in Mt. Freedom NJ because we had heard of a girl entertainer that sang cowboy songs. I knew after watching and hearing her sing in person at that little bar that she was very very special. I watched her popularity grow through the following years and played her songs constantly. Still do. I saw her in person way before she was well known.

Another was The Everly Brothers. A date with a neighbor brought us to a bar in Budd Lake NJ where this act of brothers was advertised in an enticing way. Free Show! We sat on folding chairs with the boys up front, singing and playing. A tip pot was on the wooden floor for our donation. The year was around 1951. I was 15. I knew then that they would be popular. I have no idea how I knew - but I knew!

When I first heard Barbra Streisand sing Second Hand Rose, I was playing cards in my girlfriend's living room and the TV was going in the background. The voice and that song stopped me mid-stream and grabbed my heart really hard. Ever since then, she became one of my favorites. I don't know the year but I think I heard that song before at my parent's home with Fanny Brice singing. Barbra was better! The words of that song fit me to a "T."

My parents, especially my mother, loved music of all genres - classical, jazz, pop, hymns, instrumentals, opera, Broadway, holiday, vocal, folk, and all BUT "hillbilly." My dad sang tenor in church, and groups. The lady in the neighborhood for whom I babysat had many record collections of musical compositions of fairy tales such as Peter and the Wolfe. I played them all. I loved them all.

Now to someone VERY different! I latched on to Pavarotti because of his beautiful tenor and passionate singing. It was exciting to watch him singing. I cried when he died.

I have THOUSANDS of music pieces on my old big computer. The sound resonates well in this high ceiling log cabin. I have developed a liking for blues - old time and new - and some new age recordings. I also like to listen to all piano recordings, even Liberace. Circus music is fun. Hawaiian music is soothing.

Willie monopolizes my collection. Oh MY! Knew him before he was popular too! No beard, short hair, sweet eyes, unique rhythm.

I don't like hard rock or rap at all. Not music in my book.

More on Music...

I was fussing about not being able to understand the lyrics of some of today's music.  I'm just wondering and thinking about all of the different kinds there are. Think on it...
  • Music for listening
  • Music for dancing
  • Music for singing
  • Music for marching
  • Music for rhythm
  • Music for relaxing
  • Music for telling a story
  • Music for building excitement
  • Music for joy
  • Music for sadness
  • Music for happiness
  • Music for sorrow
And the genres of
  • easy listening
  • jazz
  • pop
  • rock
  • holiday
  • country
  • Latin
  • children's
  • reggae
  • folk
  • classical
  • religious
  • gospel
  • rap/hip-hop (I don't call this music at all!)
  • new age
  • blues
  • instrumentals
  • vocal
  • soul
  • electronic
  • contemporary
  • alternative
  • instrumental
And, now think of the instruments!!!
Nope! I'm not going to list them!
This appears to be borne out by the archaeological evidence. While the first hand axes and spears date back about 1.7 million years and 500,000 years respectively, the earliest known musical instruments are just 40,000 years old.  Source: BBC

Music to My Ears

As most of my friends already know, music soothes the soul. It does so much more as well. What I just can't understand about today's music is that much of it does not soothe my soul. It has lyrics that are not pleasing to my ear and I can't even understand them most of the time. Lyrics are important to me - they tell a story or express feelings.  For instance... think on these from an old time country song -
See what I mean? More later.......

A Satisfied Mind
How many times have you heard someone say
"If I had his money, I could do things my way?"
But little they know that it's so hard to find
One rich man in ten with a satisfied mind
Once I was wading in fortune and fame
Everything that I dreamed for to get a start in life's game
But suddenly it happened, I lost every dime
But I'm richer by far with a satisfied mind
Money can't buy back your youth when you're old
Or a friend when you're lonely, or a love that's grown cold
The wealthiest person is a pauper at times
Compared to the man with a satisfied mind
When life has ended, my time has run out
My friends and my loved ones, I'll leave, there's no doubt
But there's one thing for certain, when it comes my time
I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind

I Done Died - Chris Rodrigues & Abby the Spoon Lady (WDVX Blue Plate)

I have been listening to every single one of the videos and even found a very interesting history of this woman. Her talent and the story behind it is unbelievable!
Also her solo is nice.   Solo

I STRONGLY suggest you set aside an hour to read the entire background from this link. I was impressed with her background but you have to read this entire article to really understand and know her. I'm hooked.

Wow!

I always said "Music is my heartbeat." This group is exciting to me. My music teacher from 5th through 9th grade inspired me and all of his students worshipped him. This is because of the music and instruments he taught us to listen to and to play. He was bold and commanding and soft and gentle at the same time. The only instruments I successfully played was the trumpet and the French horn, playing both in band and orchestra. Good teachers can really bring kids good memories and appreciation of all kinds of music. I also played some piano, but hated my lessons because the teacher who came to my home just didn't have it. She was pushy and mechanical in her methods. (And she hit my hand with her stick!)

Music is My Heartbeat

Where did all the little people go? I know they are inside this box! I hear them singing. I'm only a little girl sitting on the floor but I know they are dancing in there too!

Do you hear their songs? I hear violins, trumpets, french horns, tubas, cymbals, drums - I love the drums. Just a little while ago I heard a piano playing just like the kind my grandpa plays for me. Oh, gosh! there is a flute! and a saxophone! and I'll try to hear bells and harps. I don't like bagpipes because they sound sad and wail but accordions make me twirl and spin.

You might wonder how I know the names of so many instruments. Mommy puts big round black disks on the record player once in a while and she tells me which sound belongs to which instrument.

Daddy sings sometimes. He knows all the old songs and can sing without music.
Mommy and daddy met at a church where he was invited to sing with a group.

They take me to parades where I can march with the bands. Not really with them in the street but I do march! I really love band music. Boom! Boom! Boom! They take me to ride the merry-go-round too and my pretty horsie goes up and down to music that comes from the middle of the platform.

The organ pipes in our church are very big and gold. They are loud too.

Someday I'm going to listen to music all day long and I'll feel very happy.

Whoops! Now I hear bells! The Good Humor man is coming and his bells tell me to get up and run out to the curb with my nickel. Bye.......

Music is my Heartbeat.

Seriously, I have always believed that music is a wondrous creation that actually DOES soothe the soul. I know it for a fact, personally. Today I'm playing the classics. The internet has given me the opportunity to REALLY enjoy myself while I work. It makes me feel good when the day is dreary and cold. It makes me feel just fine when life seems boring. I don't even have to dig into the CD collection. I have donated my cassettes and old LP, 78 and 45 records away to others through the past few years. It was a painful decision, but the need for space rose above the hoarding instinct and I'm not sorry.

Have you ever thought about which you would rather have if you had your "druthers?"I swing back and forth between the sense of sight and the sense of sound and still haven't come to a conclusion. I'm so lucky to have both working so efficiently still.

Now I can swing and sway and dance and tap and clap and also look outside my primitive abode to enjoy the sights of nature as well. Won't you join me?

I have a great selection pegged of almost all types: classical, opera, film, orchestra, instrumentals - organ, piano, guitar, saxophone, drums - rock and roll, country (the "old kind"), blues, ragtime, folk, gospel, dixie, jazz, marching bands, children's and almost all others. My playlists contain HUNDREDS of my hand picked selections. I don't care for hip hip or rap. Maybe it's my age.

For instance, "Peter and the Wolf" is a wonderful narration with music that brought back my childhood memories. If you have never heard of Kitaro, just listen to his. WOW!

I even have a manifest of my favorite crooners and singers, and perhaps some of them are on your list as well.

A hint: Wear large and wonderful headphones to really lose yourself and you won't bother others in your nearby surroundings.

Try making your own.
