S L O W.....

Every day I look at the Portulaca I planted on May 16 for signs of a bloom. Well, today there are 2! These poor things have stretched to the sky looking for a dryout and more sun for 46 days! Thank goodness they show promise of additional pretty blossoms. Usually there is one on each shoot at the same time; they have never grown so tall before!

Even the Martha Washington Geraniums have suffered this year.

All Hosta in the surrounding area are HUGE! Ours is about to bloom. The hummingbirds love these.
The ferns love the wet weather conditions for sure!
5:00pm June 27. Lake weed control coming past. They caught me unprepared and my pictures aren't that sharp. This is done at least twice a year.

Green Green Green!

It's time to plant my Portulaca and the Mother's Day Tuberous Begonia, even if it is going to rain more in the next days ahead.
I love the feel of the warm soil in my hands and never wear gloves. "Henry" my rooster is happy now.
The little colorful blossoms will soon bud and this tub will be a flashy, splashy and vibrant sight!
The Martha Washington Geranium now sports the trellis that the bully hummingbird loved as his lookout stand.
It is a painful process for me to wait for the daffodil leaves to die out and wither away before I can cut them off but it is a necessary process in order to have blossoms again next year. As you can see clearly, the Hosta and the Seedum plants are doing well in spite of being crowded.
The sunshine brought out a daughter and her dog, a fisherman, and a sun bather!

I Never Saw IT Coming

Ya know....Autumn, Winter. Yeah! Right!  My fruit basket is empty and soon we'll be traveling to the orchard place to stock up on cider. We'll also be getting pumpkins (for decoration) and apples (for all sorts of good eating such as pies, crisp, and sauce.)

Portulaca Grandiflora

I never heard them called Moss Roses but Hootin' Anni brought it to my attention and, sure enough that is another name for them. Rose Moss is another.

Now I wish I had a large spot to plant them in the ground. I would have a huge flowerbed FULL of these beauties. They are POWERFUL! - and come in a gorgeous array of colors.

They are also called Table Rose and are widely considered to be an edible plant! In some areas they are thought of as an invasive type of weed. Some weed, eh? It is also known as Sun Plant because it needs sunlight for the blossoms to open.

It was suggested to me that I don't fertilize them as it could only produce more leaves than blossoms and might even kill them.  OK I won't. I can't detect any fragrance but the colors overcome that lack.

One more thing, they can be toxic to cats and dogs if swallowed.

Season's Ending

I love the little Portulaca plants I bought this year and how well they developed. They needed little watering and the assorted flowers were pleasing. I think (and hope) they are self-seeding for another year of prettiness. They needed very little care.

And, of course, the sedum are turning pink and falling over. I meant to trim them down before they budded so they wouldn't get top heavy, and only snipped a few tops off. It's my fault and I'll just have to do better next year. They really are beautiful, however.

Jumping Around Like a Crazy Woman

IF I could jump that is what you would say because there is no method in my madness!  First it was getting my little Portulaca into pots. That meant lots of bending and digging into the bucket of potting soil.
Then I had the "separation" talk with my baby beans and told them that they would be leaving the nest in a day or two. They are getting out of hand when they grow indoors.

There are SIX family member birthdays in May and I created cards. My firstborn turns 60! Wow I must be getting old, you think?

My daughter brought me a tiny bouquet of her bleeding hearts and I put them in a very small shot glass, I never knew she had white ones! SO SWEET! (She will be 56!)
I took a walk up into the old "Rock Garden" that once upon a long time ago was a wonderful place as Mother had planted various and sometimes unusual varieties. Now most of those are gone and currently the Chives and Tansy have taken over just as soon as the Daffodils finished showing off their yellow beauty.  Oh my aching back!
The old birdhouse might be in use. It's too high to see into it and it hasn't been cleaned out in many years. (It doesn't come apart!) The design was poor, wasn't it?
Several years ago I threw some wildflower mix seeds into the garden area and today there is a white bloom. It isn't a Queen Ann's Lace and I think it is Yarrow. Or...maybe it is a survivor of Mother's plantings.
Perhaps I'll get to show you my big black tub flower, Henry's bouquet, some large Marigolds and Beans plus more papercraft soon. Gotta get those beans OUT! I think I'm on SC withdrawal -  beach and pool no more in May and June. I am here and I love it here.
By the way, if you click on an image you can see the images larger.
