Bits 'n Pieces

A little bit of color, a little bit of snow and pieces of roast are the topics of today, plus some tiny critters.

The geese in the foreground of the painting I created seemed to fit in here. I just discovered how to create my own backgrounds in the ArtRage Lite program. I often forget about this simple old application that doesn't need internet to function.

The first snow fell yesterday afternoon. Schools had two hour delays this morning in this area. My neighbor captured the calm scene this morning. Her shots save me from going out into the cold. I do not like to be cold!

A two pound beef roast has been lingering in the freezer waiting to be pulled out and cooked. These days the crock pot is a bit heavy for me but I got 'er done. Then the electric knife went to work. Now what? It really is tasty and juicy. Of course I taste tested after all day waiting to clean up and put my kitchen back together. Perhaps I'll freeze a couple of slices in each of several single serving packets. Tomorrow.......

A granddaughter raises these little critters and I think they are cute! Too much work for me, but she has tons of knowledge and does well with her nature projects. She is an artist and talented photographer as well.

Early Morning Movement

As I was drinking coffee and watching the movement of the lake waters I saw activity on the bank. As far as I could see, there were 4 long bodied critters climbing the frosty bank and going across the road down into the area behind the dam. At first I just watched and my curiosity was fired up so I grabbed the camera, zoomed out to see better. I have determined that they were either muskrats or otters  but definitely not beaver. THEN! I saw another dark head moving but it never came totally out or went up the bank. I hope you can see the trail they made through the grass as they went up and over. I apologize for the images not being very clear but it really is a long way from the cabin to the area over there! I regret that I didn't capture the crossing activity. They looked to be having family fun.

The next activity I saw was a loose dog. That wasn't interesting except it did cause me to wonder where it came from because all residents I see in this area walk theirs with leashes and pick up the droppings. Oh well.

It is our first frost. Dang!

Nature and Natural

For the last three days I have been brushing down an abundance of  grasses and twigs from a rear carport beam and another area over a power box. It used to be that the persistent female robins would make nests on BOTH the front porch beams and in the carport - even on the horizontal hanging ladder. This year I think the swinging-hanging-moving craft creations protect the front porch. All of the beams in that area used to have water filled plastic soda bottles lined up as deterrents. No more.

Today I have water-filled plastic containers placed as obstacles. No nesting materials there-yet!

Way back in 2007 I wrote a "Memory Story" about wild critters and my interaction with some. This story reminded me of WHY I do not allow robins to nest in the carport. A reason is at the end of this ramble.

NATURE RULES!!!!!!!!

Memory Story

Something you didn't know about me - I have raised and returned to their own habitat, baby squirrels, baby rabbits, baby raccoons, baby groundhogs, baby possums, baby crows, baby owls and more. In fact, the baby squirrels and baby rabbits were put in a clothes basket with my momma cat and she nursed and groomed them along with her own kittens. When they became too playful in the house, I set them free. The squirrels took a long time to adjust to the wild and came, precariously, from the tree to the house on the clothesline, begging for fig newtons (their favorite cookie). Then one day they were gone for good.

I once looked after oriole peeps in a hanging basket that I pinned on the clothesline, too. It had fallen from a tree when they were very young and I found it on the ground.  I would reel it out to the tree and the mother would feed them. I would reel it in to the house so I could see how they were doing. One day they weren't there. I don't know if they flew or were eaten by hawks. The basket was empty except for many little white mites!

I learned early on that if I let the small kittens outdoors the hawks would swoop one up - drop it to kill it - swoop down, get it and fly away. I saw this happen! At first, I thought the kittens had wandered into the woods and got themselves lost, but I could never hear their cries nor find them. It was very upsetting to me.

I killed the crow with "kindness!" Jester was doing nicely in a large home made cage. We had a vacation planned to go to the seashore for the weekend and I put a whole ear of field corn in the cage to last him until we returned. Well......when we came home, he was dead, clutching the perch, with the empty corn cob laying nearby. His crop was huge. We figured he pigged out! Of course he didn't have enough grit in his crop to grind up that much hard corn in one sitting!  Lesson learned.

The raccoons were kept in the horse trailer. I bottle fed them. They were very noisy and loving. When the male became a bit aggressive, I set them free. did you know that they don't actually wash their food? I always had a dishpan of fresh water for them and they would dunk their kibbles before eating. It became apparent that they might not have enough saliva-production to eat. It might also be a habit to better feel their food before tasting it. It is just what they do.

The owls were in auto accidents. Stunned and a bit brain damaged, they were fed bits of hamburger meat until well. It was my brother who found them lying on the road.

If you wonder how I obtained all of these babies, be assured they were all orphans to begin with!  That's another story.

Three years ago, when Ed was recuperating from his heart surgery in May and June, I watched, from my kitchen window in the cabin, a robin build her nest in the carport. I soon saw 4 little eggs. Then, I saw 4 little heads peeking up with mouths opened wide. I saw Momma bird feed those 4 little bare-naked babies. I watched their fuzz turn to feathers. One day I saw a big crow take the last one away in his ugly bill. Boy did that make me angry! Too late for any of them to be saved. I know we shouldn't interfere with nature, but DARN!

Here and There....

In spite of all the rainy days and overly wet fields and lawns, the dirt roads are very dusty now. It's not fun to ride along and have someone pass by leaving you in the dust. Darn! I had just washed my hair too! Oh well....
It is Iris blooming time here. My patch on the beachfront is covered with weeds (it's too steep for me to even think about trying to pull them out) so I hobbled down there with my scissors and cane and cut me a few to bring up to the cabin. My mom and dad planted these many many years ago and they are still producing beautiful blooms.
The neighbors' flowerbeds have Iris in bloom as well. One has an abundant bed of yellow ones. No picture of the yellow for you today.
As for critters, there is a groundhog living under our shed again.

My brother just stopped in and told about an orphaned baby opossum that he is rearing. I am not seeing the usual rabbits or chipmunks on my rides around here and wonder why. There are way too many flocks of Canada Geese present now (they leave messes on lawns) and they all have families. The duck families are not evident yet. That is strange. The Great Blue Heron visits our beach often and he is gorgeous as he struts along looking into the shallow water edge for a meal. We have seen both mature and immature Bald Eagles fly over often. An Osprey has been fishing here with good success lately. Of course the hummingbirds are busy, both at the feeders and swiping through the air with their beaks open to catch the tiny swarms of flying bugs. It is all interesting and  wonderful to see.

Rideabout

Today I saw a red cardinal, bluejay, redwing blackbird, doves, robins, wrens, Canada geese, a lone Mallard duck, the beaver crossing the dam, four deer and YELLOW flowers! Yes, I took a nice ride around the lake. I didn't take pictures of any birds but they are all around us now. How wonderful the fresh air felt.

The downside of today was that we uncovered the porch swing and found that the cover had a leak at the top and the cushions were soaked! They are upholstered with marine vinyl fabric but have zippers and brass vent grommets. We think the water entered through the zippers. When we tilted them, the water just ran out! They are going to be drying out for a while. Yes, I already patched that leak with Gorilla tape! It is raining now! We need a hot dry day.

Now you know why I was wanting to go for a rideabout!

Fence Surprises

After joining a link up about good fences, I had fences on my mind. I believe I have some good fence photos in my archives, but today I went out and about especially to find fences - bad OR good. The following photos are today’s fences and a couple of surprises. It is my last chance to take pictures here and it was about to rain. It did rain just after I returned to cover up the golf cart until our next arrival.
