You Can Bet on It!

I have noticed recently that there are many ads on TV showing how easy it is to bet on your phones! I don't remember seeing such ads in the past. There is even a number for people to call if they have a gambling addiction and need help!!!

WHAT in the world is happening here? It is awesome to me how people love the state lotteries and now they are encouraged to bet more with their phone apps!

To me it is like driving down the road and throwing $ out of the car window - never to see it again.

One time many years ago we went with another couple to a NJ casino and I got bold and put my Susan B. Anthony dollar coin in a slot machine. Well..... that machine pumped out $100.00 in coins and filled a large cup. Of course I was encouraged by others to try again. NOPE! I carried that cup around with me for the rest of the night and in the next week, deposited it into my small savings account.  That has reinforced my position that it would be easy to become addicted and how simple it would be.

Sorry folks, I just don't understand why people gamble. Guess it must be because I worked too hard to just throw my money away in the hopes of getting more free!

I remember playing dozens of card games with friends and we never played for money. Only the game Monopoly made sense. Even at carnivals and boardwalks I could never drum up any desire to pay and play.

Now I don't condemn others who gamble but it is their choice, just not mine, ever! I just DO NOT BET!

This 'N That

I found this graphic on a blog that is written daily by one of my favorite TV anchors on our "go-to-station" WNEP. Andy Palumbo is really a gentleman with wit and humor and also seriousness in the correct places and time. His blogs can be very thought provoking. Andy's blog link

Now for my quandary... Should I really pick up my eye drop prescription renewal now even though it is the beginning of the year and I haven't met my co-pay amount at all - or even come close to it?

I have had it refilled twice last year and each time the cost was $42.20. I thought it wasn't covered and that those charges were the full cost. Wrong. That was the co-pay!  When I called to see if it was ready for pickup, the pharmacist alerted to me that the cost would be $119.81!  I probably should pay the price as I need it, but will treasure each and every drop. One little bottle will last two months if I only use it in the "scratchiest" eye! I feel like I'm a between a rock and a hard place and besides that - it is cold.
I baked my 2nd loaf of bread this morning. It is a frozen product and, though not really as tasty as I remember 'from-scratch' yeast bread. It costs just under $1.00 a loaf, slices easily and toasts well. it is OK and it smells really nice in here. Sometimes we just need an olfactory boost.

The Mister fell today when his cane gave way while he was walking to the drop box at the library to return my borrowed books. He is not hurt too bad, but had to have help to get up and now his hand is badly bruised. Nothing seems to be broken so he's home free-------AGAIN!
That's it! That's enough! Click on image if you care to see images larger.

- Follow the Money - Experiment

In the early 1970’s we had a neighbor across the road who tried to show me how to set up a budget. His idea was to have an envelope for each expense we had, and imagined we would have, and then put certain amounts of cash in each envelope so when it came time to pay, there would be enough for a particular charge. Needless to say, our income was very low, both of us were working more than one job and trying to raise a family of 6 kids. I never could catch on to the budget that he proposed for us to use. Phooey. We made it through without the budget. Granted, we never could save a penny.

The funny part is that he was a high income earner, his wife a stay-at-home mother with three kids. She did it all, even to making the girl's nylon underwear, nighties, slips, coats, boy's jackets, well…you get the idea. BUT! She had to stay within the budget of cash he would assign to her and then MARK DOWN EVERY expenditure in a book, EVEN IF IT WAS ONLY A SPOOL OF THREAD! No one would ever control me like that!

Money in, money out is how we survived. Also, my girlfriends and I all passed down clothes (not only the kid’s) and swapped stuff through those lean years. It was rare to buy anything at all that was new, We shared our needs, no matter what they were, and we experienced wonders. EVERY time we shared, something came back. Big or small, something always came our way. It was never planned but it happened.

Now back to the budget…I still don’t have one. I’m trying, though to do something I have never done and am 2 1/2 months into it. Can you guess? I wrote down categories of our expenses and we are noting EVERY penny we spend and where it goes on a pad. Then they are combined and  transferred to the monthly list.  Already we’ve learned that in January we spent $233.89 less that our January income. In February we spent $125.08 more than our February income. Won’t it be fun at the end of the year to see if it all balances out? Even the Mister is in the swing of things and it is kind of a fun project!

Here are my categories, alphabetically of course. I think alphabetically. Always have.
