The Dress

Today is my mother's 108th birthday. I honor her with this post because the celebration of my parent's 50th anniversary was one she planned and organized and was very happy when it all went so well.

When the 50th anniversary party was planned, there was to be a surprise for all to see. It was something she called "The Dress" and she wrote a long story about it many years ago. I will post that next blog. Get ready for a long read there!

The year of this event was 1984.

Now to better explain the sequence. In 1896 my mother's parents were married on August 12. Their 50th anniversary was celebrated at our home with a casual dinner in the backyard with guests on August 12, 1946.

In 1934 my parents were married on August 12. Their 50th anniversary was celebrated at a Masonic Hall near their home on August 12, 1984 with many guests invited. I don't find a photo of her wearing the dress. She once told me she did, but no photos were taken.

The surprise at the 50th Anniversary party was my youngest daughter wearing the exact unaltered dress that, at the time was then 88 years old. She was thin enough at age 27 to model it well. The dress was eventually donated to a historical society in the Budd Lake NJ area in 2005, the year of her death.

The photos were all labeled by my mother and put in a hand-crafted album made by my sister Jeanette. I treasure that album.

My brother was the Master of Ceremonies, my sister Jeanette, made dozens of white ceramic doves as table gifts for the guests. The dove has different meanings for marriage but mostly peace, devotion and love in this story. Today I have two. One is mine, the other was my parent's. My sister Joyce, provided the cake.  Years later I was given the pretty vase that was the 50th anniversary gift at my grandparents' anniversary celebration. It held yellow roses. I have my mother's wedding ring and I can see how thin it became and the best part is that I still can read the interior inscription— Tranquility GNN & PFD 8-12-'34.

The Wedding

The granddaughter of my lifelong friend, was married Sunday and we attended. You might say this is not such a big deal, outdoor weddings happen all of the time. My reply to you would be this was a very special one for us and for her parents and for her grandmother in Heaven. We were attending as "honorary grandparents." Wow! That was so very nice.

You see, we go way back. My firstborn daughter and my girlfriend's firstborn son came into this world sixty years ago. He was at the wedding with his family and is the bride's uncle. His sister is the bride's mother. We have all known each other for a very long time and thankfully, are close neighbors.

The wedding was held at a beautiful farm that has been made into a venue for gatherings such as this. This was the first wedding The Farm has had and was chosen because the owners were good friends of the groom and this was their dream. All in all it is a wonderful and successful endeavor.

The day was hot and the walk through the field to be seated before the decorative wedding arch took its toll but we wouldn't have missed it for anything. After the ceremony, there was a walk back from the field to a small white catering/cocktail barn. Hors d'oeuvres‎ and cocktails were available and one of the bride's grandmother's quilts was casually hung in this room, along with a table with many family photographs.  A covered outdoor patio attached to this building was set up for silly pictures to be taken of guests with humor. Here are examples:

Now, don't laugh! We were impressed with the very fancy luxury restroom trailer with 6 stations for both ladies and gents that was nearby and it was nothing like we had ever experienced.

Directly across from the small barn, a very large barn was renovated to accommodate a catered buffet meal, dancing and all customary wedding reception activities. The huge open interior was decorated in an earthy and nature oriented theme, beautiful and in great taste. We are anxiously awaiting photos as I purposely didn't take my camera. There were several photographers and video photographers documenting it all.  The bride's cousin even manned a drone! In the meantime, the ones here may give an idea of what I'm talking about but will never fully project the beautiful and well planned wedding of Sarah and Chad.

My Experience - Granddaughter's Wedding

Amber Lynne’s Wedding

A couple of days before the trip to NJ I went to daughter Missy’s to try on blouses and jackets that would be necessary to wear - one outfit for the rehearsal dinner and one for the actual wedding at the church and the reception. I had good shoes and slacks. I didn’t take a coat. I was planning to bring the old faux fur coat, but the lining was really too tattered and my common sense took over. Then I dug out a vintage 1960 piece of American Tourister luggage from the top shelf of my closet in which to put a bag of necessary magic tools which would make me presentable. I had stored extra towels in it and now filled it with with things I thought I’d need. Of course, it didn’t have wheels or wasn’t modern but it was in excellent condition and served my purpose. Both of my daughters and a son-in-law had to lug it from place to place, though. I could have pulled it if it had a handle and wheels!

My Pa daughter and I arrived to my NJ daughter’s home in time to have a lunch of assorted sandwiches on wonderful fresh breads. She had pre-ordered this, along with the next day’s breakfast of freshly baked muffins and donuts from a local bakery. She and her husband were not there when we arrived because they were taking their two dogs, a young Boxer and an old Boston Terrier, to a special “dog sitter.” The Bengal cat greeted us warmly. We all left for the rehearsal at the church later that afternoon. The traffic was TERRIBLE! It was Thursday, and working people and school busses and the large machines that suck up the huge piles of leaves at all the curbs were slow traveling and many.

At the restaurant after the rehearsal, PANEVINO RISTORANTE, there were appetizers and a buffet with great selections of authentic Italian foods. White or red wine was served throughout the time there. It was very noisy and the excited jabber and conversational interchanges were both animated and loud. We surely didn’t leave hungry or thirsty!

The next day, after the hairdresser appointment and the application of makeup and the full dressing was completed, my daughter, mother of the bride, and her husband, all fully dressed left for the bride’s home to be in the start of a video. We left later, taking with us her husband’s elderly father and made it to the church on time.  The traffic, again was “stop and go” all the way. This is Friday traffic - appalling afternoon.

The wedding ceremony was solemn, ritualistic and a celebration as well. It lasted about one and one half hours. Photographers, both professional and personal took pictures throughout the service. That surprised me and seemed rude for the unprofessionals to be snapping and flashing. The professionals were less conspicuous.

After the congratulations and hugs were given along the receiving line the next road trip for me and my PA daughter was to the Wyndham Hotel. We followed my sister and her husband as they had already familiarized themselves with the route. We would have been lost for certain on our own.

The room had been pre-booked by my daughter. It was very nice, with all of the amenities. You know - an iron, an ironing board, a hair drier, treats and more. The first thing I did was to make a cup of coffee and take off my shoes. They weren’t hurting my feet  at all - I just needed them off. We rested a little, but knew that soon the real celebrations would begin. You know, all the “meets and greets” and back slappings and face recognitions. Smiles and frowns would be abundant everywhere.

Down we went from the 3rd floor to the lobby and into the shuttle bus that was waiting to  take us to the  Brooklake Country Club, a few miles away. Then into the  “Venue” we stepped - as they call it in NJ. I was being educated more. We were guided to the third floor of this beautiful place where it was “cocktail time” and I simply cannot describe the appetizers that were spread out in grand style. My daughter brought me some jumbo shrimp, lobster claws, and a vodka martini on ice as I requested. There was so much spread on decorated tables there I just did not understand such excess and array of delicious foods; canapés, hors d’oeuvres, tidbits, dips, relishes, fruits, antipastos, aperitifs, finger foods, and munchies. Then we were called into the main room.

It was a menu to never forget.

In between courses there was dancing, music and expected wonderful activities. I stayed until the end.  We then went back to the hotel on the shuttle, and to bed. The next morning, a breakfast bar for the wedding party and all of us was the finale’ and then the goodbyes and trip back to PA.

The couple left Sunday for St. Lucia in the Carribean for a ten day honeymoon. St. Lucia is one of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, St. Lucia and is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. St. Lucia is only 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, with a shape that is said to resemble either a mango or an avocado (depending on your taste). The Atlantic Ocean kisses its eastern shore, while the beaches of the west coast owe their beauty to the calm Caribbean Sea.

Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

By the way, her brother was married last year - on her birthday - but he had an accident at work two days before this wedding and broke his foot and wasn't able to attend as a groomsman. His wife was there as a bridesmaid and their new baby stayed at home with her father. I did get to visit with one of my sons and be introduced to his new lady friend. My other daughter was there and I visited a bit with my grandchildren and her husband.

I've already had a professionally made video link sent to me and it was nice. Now I'm anxious to see the photo proofs and hope she'll send me a picture.

Good Fences #11

Lonely Arbor

At the end of the campground property is an exclusive section belonging to the founder's family.  The private Valentine's Day wedding was held at the edge of the woods for a family member. The couple stood in front of the arbor and it was decorated with little red lights, ribbons and red hearts. It now stands alone without the embellishments of the flowers and the bride and groom. No one goes there now.

The feelings of a happy and busy time remain in this isolated area though the arbor is empty.

History:
What seemed an impossible dream in 1959 became a remarkable accomplishment... Carl and Marion Perry developed a small 125-site campground, Camp Beachwood. Eventually that investment led the Perry’s to open Lakewood Camping Resort, the first privately owned campground on the Grand Strand! It was the only resort of it’s kind offering customers a resort experience for a fraction of the cost of staying in a hotel. With affordability and a focus on family values, the Perry's continue to make Lakewood Camping Resort the choice destination in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Today the family investment has grown to 1,100 campsites, 105 rental Villas and more than 790 Villas owned by individuals from all over North America. With luxurious amenities spread across 200 acres of prime oceanfront real estate, Lakewood has grown to be one of the largest camping resorts in the world. An award winning mega RV Park, recognized as the National Mega Park of the Year for 2010-2011. The "Best Of South Carolina" Award in 2012, as well as the "Plan-It Green" Award for 2011-2012.
When Marion and Carl Perry were led to open the first privately owned campground in Myrtle Beach in 1959, they initially believed they were embarking on a new business venture. However, it didn't take them long to realize that their family owned business was just a vehicle that God was going to use to accomplish His goals.
Mr. and Mrs. Perry grasped the vision that they were to be stewards of the new property that God had entrusted to them to operate a Christian-oriented campground that offered campers a place to come and find good family values and an environment that promoted Christian ideas.  They also saw the opporunity to share the gospel in a casual environment with many adults and children who may never enter into a formal worship setting.  On January 10, 1972 Lakewood Campground Ministry was founded. The ministry is a non-profit ministry and is still a vital part of Lakewood's community today.
Lakewood Camping Resort is still owned and operated by the Perry family. It is their mission to continue to make Lakewood family focused so guests can enjoy Myrtle Beach, South Carolina... a place of beauty, harmony and one of the most tranquil atmospheres you will find anywhere!
