Like Mother Like Daughter(s)...

All of my children have been to the beach and ocean since they were little. I gave them a taste of the salt air and waters whenever I could. It is ingrained in me and now them. My mother took me many times to Asbury Park, NJ even as I was a baby! She had her best girlfriend to stay with because that wonderful "aunt" had a place in Ocean Grove.

And so it goes... The grandchildren love the ocean and beach as well.

Recently two of my "girls" had a short visit to celebrate their birthdays in May. They told me it was very windy and cold but enjoyed it just the same.

These two ladies are similar in their tastes for pets. Like me! Their pets are family members. Like mine! Their children have many pets as well.
This is SNOW! Bengal breed.
You've already met Charlie and this is "Lexi."

"Massimo"
Both ladies are excellent cooks and bakers too. BRAG! BRAG! I'm very proud of them.

ANA

Yesterday: She's comin' through...not to worry much. Wind feels great blowing cobwebs out of head! Invigorating! Love her.

It's official! Ana made landfall at 6am today midway between North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach. It took all night for her to get here and it will take all day for her to get out. We expect more showers and gusty winds. Exciting! I'll try to stay dry and won't be able to take pictures. :(

Birds and Boletus

I spent the afternoon yesterday sitting on the overview ramp that leads to the beach. The sun was warm and it was a great sight when the pelicans and osprey were diving into the ocean for fish. These are their ways: pelicans dive beak first for their catch - osprey dive head first then switch at the last second to grab prey with their feet. Since I had my camera handy, I thought I would try to get their action. What a failure I had with those shots. I'm used to taking pictures of still and close up things and this was VERY different. I pushed to focus then pushed to take a photo and my subject matter was just plain too fast for me. I even had camera set to "sport" which could have stopped action if I could have them in the right place when I shot. Part of my problem was that they were so far away and I'm not a professional photographer with an adequate zoom lens nor knowledge of what tactic and settings to use. The photos below are my poor results but I WILL try again. I took 38 shots so was satisfied to have a few to share. Unfortunately I missed the osprey completely.

After two hours I headed for home and noticed shapely brown clumps on a neighbor's lawn. Curiosity prevailed and these are my best photo accomplishments of the day. Of course, after returning home I had to research and be able to name them. I'm still not sure of identification, as it is tricky, and I NEVER would eat these even though I love tasty fungi.

Boletus queletii otherwise known as the deceiving bolete, is an uncommon, edible mushroom in the genus Boletus. It can be found in deciduous forest, at lower altitudes, mostly under beech.

Boletus is a genus of mushroom, comprising over 100 species. The genus Boletus was originally broadly defined and described by Elias Magnus Fries in 1821, essentially containing all fungi with pores.

October Flowers and More

Most of the tourists have left the campground now, leaving the beach and enjoyable activities at rest.  Soon, during the first week in November, horses and mules, and donkeys will be arriving for the 32nd Annual Jack Monroe Annual Beach Ride. There will be the good aromas of leather, sweat and other equine deposits permeating the salt air. This is an annual event to raise money for the American Heart Association.

There will be dogs and hay and grain and tack, and campers, including tents and wagons here.  Most of all, fencing of all types is brought in along with vehicles and riders and exhibitors from many states. The horsemen and women and children will gather throughout the area for this worthy cause. This is the only campground in the area that allows this type of activity, and the ocean beacons their return each year.

I'll be among many, taking pictures and watching demonstrations and just having myself a great time talking with the participants.

I'll be back soon with photos!
